Interview: Jeff Roberts, Executive Director, Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition

An open and democratic government depends on the ability of voters and citizens to know what their elected representatives are doing.

Open Meetings Laws, Sunshine Laws, and Record Requests, all exist to provide transparency and accountability for lawmakers.

Colorado has very important Sunshine Laws, including the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA), and Open Meetings Laws.

The Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition is a non-profit organization that is “the voice for open government in Colorado.”

From their website: “The nonpartisan Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition promotes freedom of the press, open courts and open access to government records and meetings at the state and local level.”

Jeff Roberts is the Executive Director, and a former Denver Post editor.

In this interview, Jeff joins me to provide background on Colorado’s Sunshine Laws, opportunities for their improvement and challenges that face those pursuing open government.
