Who
We’re a grassroots group of nonpartisan citizens rallying to end the Greeley, CO Food Tax.

What
Currently, there is a 3% tax on all groceries purchased in Greeley.

Why
• The Food Tax is the most sinister of all taxes, for it’s a tax on nourishment: the very sustenance we need to live.

• The Food Tax is unethical. It steals the hard-earned money from people. That stolen money could’ve been used to buy more food, gas, housing, electricity, and childcare, among many other things.

• Food sustains life; the Food Tax is unsustainable. Taking away our food hurts our ability to thrive.

• Inflation is at at all-time high. Groceries aren’t affordable. Our nation is in crisis.

Public Pushes Back Against Food Tax

The Greeley City Council faced scrutiny from the public back in August, when they voted to place the permanent food tax extension on the ballot.

From the Greeley Tribune Article:

In a poll presented last month to city council, only 53% of Greeley residents polled said they would support the continuation of the food tax. Many residents have voiced their opposition to the tax and are looking for ways to keep extra money in their pockets.

That includes Mike Dickerson, who moved to Greeley in 2021.

“We as citizens have had to do more with less, and the city will have to do more with less just like we the citizens do,” Dickerson said.

Greeley resident Brandon Wark founded Free State Colorado, a group that’s urging Greeley residents to stop the food tax. The group points to the rising cost of groceries and urges the city to cut back on spending.

“The food tax is unethical,” Wark wrote in an article on the Free State Colorado website. “It steals the hard-earned money from people. That stolen money could’ve been used to buy more food, gas, housing, electricity, and childcare, among many other things.”

Support for the Greeley Food Tax is at an all-time low:

Here’s a draft of what you can say to your neighbors, community newspaper or local community group:

Good day,

I’m writing to encourage you to vote against Greeley Measure 2L, extending the Food Tax here in Greeley.

The high cost of living has made life more difficult for so many families, seniors and working class members of our community.

Although it may not seem like much, the 3% food tax can cost families hundreds of dollars every year.

You have the opportunity to save Greeley families money on their grocery bill and provide much needed tax relief.

I encourage you to vote against Greeley Measure 2L, the Food Tax extension. It’s time to let this measure expire.

It’s time to save the residents of Greeley money.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
