Over 100,000 Coloradans recently lost power due to a preemptive shutoff of electrical service from Xcel Energy.
This unprecedented shutoff was due to the risk of wildfires being caused by downed power lines due to high winds.
For days, Coloradans were without power, losing food from a lack of refrigeration, being unable to work remotely, and being unable to heat their homes.
Many people are angry at Xcel Energy for failing to do their job of delivering electricity to homes and businesses.
But the story is more complicated than that according to Frank Lehnerz, a Fort Collins based engineer who works in the Electric Energy Industry.
In this video, Frank provides a breakdown of Colorado’s electric economy, shares a broader picture of the energy industry, and explains how utilities are highly regulated by our State Government.
