Inspiring David vs. Goliath Battle in Lakewood as Citizens Fight City Hall to Save Their City!

What do you do when your City Council passes a bad policy?

You get organized!

In Lakewood, residents have come together from all sides of the political spectrum to push back against a bad policy that would fundamentally change the city.

In late 2025, the City Council passed four zoning changes that would create high-density housing in suburban neighborhoods, creating a crowded, dense community.

Citizens rallied against the changes.

Four separate petitions were circulated and completed to create a citizen-led referendum challenging the controversial plan.

Now, the Lakewood City Council has a choice. They can either repeal the zoning or allow the special election to take place.

The City Council Meeting will take place on Monday, January 26th, and citizens are urging the Council to let the election proceed.

Karen Gordey is one of these citizen activists who, along with many others is fighting for her community.

In this video Karen explains the fight in Lakewood and how residents from all walks of life have come together to challenge the city.

It’s an inspiring tale that shows the power of the people to stand up and push back against bad policy.
